Safety Guide for Welcoming Your Kitten – Wild Gold
Here are some essential tips to ensure the safety and well-being of your kitten in your home.
1. Secure your home
Windows and balconies:
Cats, even very agile ones, can fall accidentally.
⇒ Install protective nets on all open windows and balconies.
⇒ Never leave a tilt-and-turn window half-open unattended (risk of entrapment and asphyxiation).
⇒ Free access to unsecured balconies or terraces should be prohibited.
Dangerous objects:
⇒ Carefully store sticks, electrical wires, elastic bands, strings, small objects that could be ingested or cause accidents.
⇒ Do not leave plastic bags accessible (risk of suffocation).
Sinks and toilets:
⇒ Prevent access to sinks: stagnant and dirty water is dangerous.
⇒ Turn bowls upside down or cover sinks to prevent accidental ingestion.
Washing machines and dryers:
⇒ Always check the inside of the machine before closing or starting it.
⇒ Cats love to crawl into these appliances to sleep, which can lead to serious accidents.
2. Secure chemicals
Always store up high or in closed cupboards:
Household products: detergents, dishwashing liquids, toilet cleaners, bleach, drain cleaners, etc.
Human medications: even a tiny amount can be fatal to a cat (paracetamol, painkillers, antidepressants, etc.).
After washing the floor or surface, be sure to rinse and dry thoroughly to avoid any toxic contact.
3. Food: what is prohibited
Your kitten should only eat its kibble and wet food.
Its wet food is a sufficient and balanced reward.
Avoid any other food that could harm it.
Food products dangerous for your cat:
Canned tuna: excess salt, mineral imbalance.
Ham and cold cuts: too salty, rich in nitrates and toxic additives.
Cheeses: poor digestion of lactose, serious digestive risks.
Chocolate, coffee, tea: very toxic (caffeine, theobromine).
Avocado: Contains persin, which is toxic to cats.
Grapes and raisins: cause acute kidney failure.
Onions, garlic, leeks, chives: destroy red blood cells (risk of severe anemia).
Important:
Even a very small amount of these foods can seriously poison your kitten.
4. Other precautions
Regularly check that there are no toxic plants in your home (examples: lilies, dieffenbachia, ficus, aloe vera, philodendron, etc.).
Be careful with scented candles, essential oils, and incense: some are highly toxic if inhaled.
Be very careful with room fragrances, aerosol air fresheners, sprays, incense, electric diffusers and fabric softeners:
⇒ These products release volatile substances that irritate the cat’s respiratory tract.
⇒ They can cause coughing, sneezing, shortness of breath or aggravate respiratory problems such as feline asthma.
Do not leave curtain or blind cords hanging: risk of strangulation or falling.
Be careful with open toilets (risk of drowning for a young kitten).
5. First actions in case of ingestion of toxic substances
We strongly recommend that you carry activated charcoal, available in health food stores or pharmacies.
In the event of accidental ingestion of a toxic plant, chemical, or food, activated charcoal can help absorb some of the toxins in the stomach before they enter the bloodstream.
Caution: Activated charcoal is not a substitute for urgent veterinary consultation!
Thank you for your trust.
